Swelling in liver or Hepatomegaly is a condition in which the liver expands beyond its average size. Generally greater than 15 centimeters in the midclavicular line. However, normal liver size varies by person depending on the person’s sex, age, height, weight, and body size.
People generally ignore this but it should be never ignore as an enlarged liver is a sign of another illness, such as hepatitis. There are numerous therapy options available, but one must first determine the source of the problem.
Causes of Hepatomegaly
One of the following factors could be causing your liver to enlarge:
1. Fatty liver.
2. Obesity
3. Diabetes
4. Blood pressure
5. Infection is a contagious disease (such as hepatitis B or hepatitis C)
6. Medications or alcoholic beverages
7. Toxins
8. When your immune system destroys healthy tissue, you have an autoimmune disease.
Metabolic syndrome is a condition in which the body’s metabolism (a group of risk factors for heart disease that includes high blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol levels; and belly fat)
Fat, protein, or other substances build-up due to genetic problems
Unusual growths.
This could be as a result of:
1. Cysts
2. Tumors that begin in the liver and spread there
3. There is an issue with blood flow. This could be attributed to a variety of factors, including:
4. Heart failure, or congestive heart failure, is a condition in which your heart does not pump blood as efficiently as it should.
5. A blockage of veins in your liver is known as hepatic vein thrombosis.
6. A blockage in your liver’s tiny veins is known as veno-occlusive disease.
Symptoms of Hepatomegaly
If your liver is somewhat enlarged, you probably won’t notice any symptoms. But if it’s exceptionally swollen, you could be experiencing the following:
1. a sense of fullness
2. Feeling uneasy in your stomach
You may have the following symptoms depending on the reason for your enlarged liver:
1. Yellowing of the skin or eyes is a common symptom (jaundice)
2. Weakness and exhaustion
3. Nausea
4. Loss of weight
Risk Factors for Hepatomegaly:
If you have a swollen liver, you’re more prone to:
1. Drink a lot of booze
2. You have a bacterial, parasitic, or viral infection.
3. Take more vitamins, supplements, or drugs than is suggested.
4. Are you overweight, or do you eat a bad diet?
Diagnosis of Hepatomegaly
Your doctor will examine your liver to discover if it is larger than it should be. They might request some blood tests to figure out what’s going on.
You’ll very certainly have imaging tests as well, such as:
CT scan
Ultrasound
ERCP, or endoscopic retrograde cholecystectomy
They may also want to do a liver biopsy to rule out other possibilities.
Treatment for Hepatomegaly
The cause determines the treatment for an enlarged liver. These lifestyle adjustments may assist if you have a lot of fat in your liver or drink too much alcohol:
1. Reduce your weight
2. Reduce the amount of alcohol you consume.
3. Maintain a balanced diet.
4. Increase your physical activity.
5. If you have a disease-causing swollen liver, you may be prescribed medication or other therapies.
Hepatomegaly Prognosis
