Pune, November 30, 2024 – Recent news highlights confusion about the rules for doctors using social media. The National Medical Commission (NMC) introduced new guidelines on August 3, 2023. However, these rules were put on hold on August 24, 2024, leaving doctors uncertain about what is allowed.

The National Medical Commission has introduced strict guidelines to curb the misuse of social media by doctors.
1) Patient testimonial videos, where doctors feature alongside patients sharing their experiences, are now prohibited as they are deemed unethical.
2) Doctors are also banned from buying followers or using social media agencies to inflate their online presence artificially.
3) Registered medical practitioners cannot endorse any products, medicines, or medical services, including diagnostic procedures.
4) Publicising specific treatments, such as surgeries or diagnostic tests like CT or PET scans, to attract patients is forbidden.
5) Additionally, directly or indirectly soliciting patients through social media platforms is considered a violation.
6) All activities by doctors on social media must adhere to medical ethics and avoid deceptive practices aimed at gaining popularity
Legal experts suggest that doctors should continue following the 2002 rules until new updates are officially announced. Staying careful on social media will help doctors protect their professional image and maintain trust with patients.
Further updates will be shared as soon as the NMC provides more clarity. For now, doctors are encouraged to act responsibly and ethically in all their online activities.
